‘SOOEY!’ PIG RACING ANSWERS THE CALL IN MARATHON

On a beautiful, sunny Sunday afternoon... Wanda and Irv attend their first "Pig Races" having no idea what to expect. The 15 racers were divided into three types of pigs and there were three races. These are not your "hogs" on Wanda's relatives farm in Alabama as a girl.

Rosaire’s Royal Racers come in a variety of sizes and speeds. Spectators, sports fans and swine lovers geared up for the second annual National Pig Days celebration. In recognition of National Pig Day on March 1, which recognizes the clever and highly intelligent domesticated pig, the Stuffed Pig Restaurant, located at mile marker 49, is teaming up with Rosaire’s Royal Racers to host live pig racing for hordes of squealing fans — complete with a pig mascot... Willie T. Bacon.

In answer to the question... how do you get the pigs to race. Simple... Oreo cookies. The pigs are released into the winner's circle to eat oreo cookies prior to the race then put into the starting gate... they're off, racing back to the winner's circles and those oreo cookies.

Other weekend attractions include live music and dancing, raffles, kids’ activities and a silent auction. Special lunch and dinner menus are to feature burgers, hot dogs, seafood and even barbecued pork.

Proceeds from the lively weekend are to benefit the Grace Jones Day Care Center of Marathon. Grace Jones is a non-profit day care for under privileged children but have a small percentage of children whose parents pay fees like Lucas who attended Grace Jones for several years and now goes there for after school care. It's a beautiful facility which was rebuilt by private contributions and grants after being devastated by Hurricane Wilma. Sharon is on the board. Wanda and Irv attended the 4:30pm Sunday race. With one race to run, it was announced that $7.000 had been raised to that point from spectator's "financially" backing their choice of winner.
