2010 Florida Keys Birding and Wildlife Festival

The last weekend in September brings the Florida Birding and Wildlife Festival to Curry Hammock State Park with all the exhibits, wildlife and food.

Grandma and Grandpa take Lucas each year.

Our adventure begins when we approach the ranger station where Grandma and Grandpa's friend, Miss Dorothy who works at the park is waiting to say hello and give us all the information we need to have a fun time. Lucky for us, it wasn't raining like it was when Miss Dorothy and her puppy, Joelene was our walking in the park.

Next, Miss Dorothy's husband, Mr. Joel who also works for the park, shows us where to park the car.

Out of the car we hop to our fist exhibit, the check-in station where Lucas is measured arms outstretched for his "wingspan". He's 36' from outstretched arm finger tip to finger tip. The measurement and his name go on his festival bracelet. Grandpa is given a card for each of us to get signed at the exhibits. We will bring our signed cards back to check-in station for our free festival shirts.

Lucas needs to make a stop at the playground before beginning our tour.

Now we're off to our fist stop at the button making booth where Lucas colors a firetruck and uses a big machine to put it inside the button for his shirt.

Since we thinking of firetrucks, our next stop is the Fish and Wildlife Rescue booth where the rangers introduce Lucas to Smokey the Bear and show him how rescue gear the rangers wear in a fire.

Next we visit the wildlife exhibit where we are introduced to a live five different kinds of turtle, a lizard, iguana, a Boa, corn snake, two rat snakes (lots of snakes)and the Florida State Panther.

Now, it's time for some work at the Home Depot booth. Lucas makes a wooden and mirror periscope.

Step across the grass to make a paper fan for this hot keys weather using sea creature ink prints for decoration.

On the way to the food booth, we took time to look at, touch and play with the twelve foot long Boa skin and head molded from plastic.

The Fish and Wildlife Rescue team had a plastic tank filled with water where we saw two different kinds of keys lobsters, live conchs who looks at us with their beady eyes... all kinds of deep water sea creatures.

Off to get a terrific hot dog for Lucas and Grandma while Grandpa gets a Vegie Burger. We had lunch partners at the next table... three friendly dogs. One, Rosie was five years old, like Lucas.

Tummy's full, it's time to leave the park but first a stop at the beautiful Curry Hammock State Park day use bathhouse for a quick potty break.

Goodbye to Mr. Joel and off we head home after thanking everyone for a wonderful day.
